On Monday we worked on our roller coasters!  Ellie, Rowan, Mckenzie, and I had to leave early because we had to go to a track meet, but we got our turn down and all we have to do is label it.

On Tuesday we went through Boyle’s law because on Wednesday we went Scuba diving!  Boyle’s law says that when pressure is increased the volume is decreased and vise versa.

On Wednesday we went Scuba diving from 10:40 to 2:55.  It was so much fun!  We went to have a safety lesson first where the man explained how to breath and how to pump air through our vest’s if we were sinking to the bottom.   The most important thing to do he said was do not stop breathing.  You could get the bends which is when your lungs inflate too much when you come up and then they keep expanding and then you could experience burning pain in your lungs.  I was a little nervous at first but it was so much fun to breath underwater!

On Thursday we cleaned the Peace Garden.  We weeded and raked.  I can’t believe that the year went by so quickly!

If you went scuba diving and you get the bends underwater what do you do?

Are we going to work on our roller coasters on Monday?

How is graduation only 26 days away?

Annie Van Maanen – Class of 2014 – with Pathfinder teachers Lynne Tobin and Shane Boland Harrison at her senior thesis…

Posted by The Pathfinder School on Friday, May 4, 2018

This week was Tapestry!  It was so much fun!

On Friday after pizza lunch we went to Interlochen Arts Academy to see alumni Annie VanMaanen’s senior thesis art show.  It was incredible.  Annie’s parents divorced when she was in 7th grade, and her art showed and examined how she coped during that time.  She recorded a video about her walking and talking to a friend and it was very real.  She said that when her parents were arguing she would stack cups and see how many she could stack without them falling, and when they did fall it would turn her parents attention back to her.  At the art show there were 700 cups stacked and then some of the other kids knocked it down!  That was fun to watch.  And she did sort of a block print painting of her blanket that she used for comfort when she was younger.  It was a very interesting art show.  Her friends also had some things next to her’s and one book on systemic racism was very interesting and horrifying.  Did you know that black children are viewed as older than a white child the same age, and are therefore more responsible if anything happens.  And if a white person and a black person are arrested for the same crimes, the black person is three times more likely to be convicted than the white person.  It’s horrible what society has done.

How long did it take Annie to put together her thesis?

How long did it take her to stack all of those cups?

Did you go to Interlochen for all of highschool?

On Monday we started our roller coaster.  We were split into groups of twos and threes and set to the task of figuring out how much money it would take to get all the needed supplies.  We have a budget of 10,000 dollars and with that we can buy dowels, cardboard, cups, etc.  On Tuesday we bought our supplies.  We only spent around 2500 dollars but for each centimeter of dowel it’s 10 dollars.  That adds up pretty fast.  On Wednesday we started to make it.  At the beginning we were going to make it really tall.  Using the entire dowel for the beginning.  We decided that it was way too tall and cut a third of it off.  Shane said it’s required that we have on slope, one hill, and one turn.  Rowan and Stella’s is already done and they have a really funny turn.  I had a bloody nose for twenty minutes and I couldn’t help that much.  Zach and Elliot first taped the dowel done and then we decided to hot glue it down and then tape it.  It’s really fun so far and can’t wait to finish it.  We have to answer some questions about friction and force that applies to our roller coaster.

On Thursday a parent with kids at Pathfinder came in and walked us through a pig’s heart and lungs.  He is a cardiologist.  He showed us the aorta and the right atrium.  The muscle on the right atrium I think is really thick because it pumps blood to the entire body.  There are veins that bring blood in and it’s all really disgusting because it’s all red and goopy and stringy.  The muscles on the other side however were pretty thin because it only had to pump blood to the heart.  Then there was the aorta valve that closes the the lower left chamber to hold in the blood thats full of oxygen that will be pumped to  out to the body.  Oxygen depleted bloods enters the left atrium through the pulmonary vein.  Where the blood then goes to the left ventricle chamber of the heart.  The blood is then ready to be pumped throughout the body with oxygen-rich blood to the tissues.

What does the superior vena cava do?

If your right atrium stopped working then what would happen?

Does the heart gradually or instantly stopped producing oxygen-rich blood after the person dies?

This is a slide we did in science class.  Mine is about momentum.  hope you like it.

What would happen to the world if momentum somehow wasn’t around anymore?

If we didn’t have the equation for momentum and speed, how far behind would we be in scientific discoveries?

If the world was flat, would the use of momentum change at all?

This week we again just did a lot of filming.  Our Joe’s Lungs video is almost done and we only have to do a couple more voiceovers and editing.  On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we filmed.  On Tuesday we film the scene where I leave Joe and run away.  He gets all raged at the doctor and then I shout at him and stuff.  On Wednesday I get married to the waiter from Olive Garden, Oscar. (A.K.A. Nik).  But I never divorced Joe so yeah.  It was so funny because I couldn’t stop laughing and I had a science sack on in place of a vail.  And Zach was just talking gibberish because the whole scene was going to be a voice over with Zach as Joe’s lungs talking about what happened.  It took a whole period to film it and it was freezing outside.  I didn’t have any guests because the rest of the class was they were all in the wedding!  Afterwards, we edited some and the other group filmed some scenes.  On Thursday we just did a lot of editing and voiceovers of Zach, except all of that got deleted so we have to do it again which stinks!  But only one more day till Spring Break!!!! Can’t wait!

Will we have time to do the voiceovers when we get back from spring break?

What is our next unit topic?

Can we play more kahoots?

Monday: On Monday we worked more on our Joe’s lungs project.  I think we filmed a couple more scenes and edited our script.  Our script didn’t say much about the lungs, so we had to add in some more facts and made our script longer.  The entire video will be around 6 minutes I think.

Tuesday:  On Tuesday we watched a video about a kid who’s close friend/uncle died of cancer, and he went onto the Internet and found the single, what was it?, cell that would signal the cancer.  He went on to find out the cheapest way to find it and if they had had what he discovered when his “uncle” fell ill, there is a high percentage that his uncle wouldn’t have died.

Wednesday/Thursday: We filmed a lot.  Nik, who does most of the filming is “VERY” picky on the takes and often makes us redo them.  But it’s fun.  For the doctor’s office scene, Nik climbed up the railing without his boots and it was really funny!  Shane has a video of it.  Joe is Joe in Joe’s lungs and he is an alcoholic and a smoker.  He contracted asthma because he smokes so much and when he had an asthma attack in a restaurant and went berserk on the waiter.  His wife decided to divorce him, and marry the waiter.  Joe then decided to quite smoking and became a healthy person and worked in a family owned shop.

How old is the kid who discovered how to find out if you had the cancer?

What was the cancer that his uncle died to?

When do we have to be done with the Joe’s Lungs project?

Monday: We worked on the Joe’s lungs skit, and we tested and taped our hovercrafts!  The Joe’s lungs skit is really fun to create and Malia, Nik, Joe, and Zach are in my group.  Joe is playing Joe, Malia is the doctor, Nik is the waiter, and Zach is the lungs.  Zach narrates a lot.  It’s really funny to make the skit because we all have different ideas so we’re half yelling!  We successfully made hovercrafts!  We tested our hovercraft out and we had to  tape it a little more but it works and it’s really fun!

Tuesday: We worked on Joe’s lungs the entire time!  We got a good portion of the skit done and on Wednesday we are going to start researching the lungs.

Wednesday: Never mind what I said yesterday!  We have a snow day!!!  More of a rain day since it didn’t really snow, but it actually doesn’t look bad outside at all.  Duncan assigned homework and tonight is the spelling bee.  Spelling is actually very hard!  There are so many different techniques and things to remember.

Thursday: We worked on hovercrafts for our science class and then later that evening was the science expo!  It was really fun!  Ellie, Mariah, Rowan, and I graded Sophia, Willow, David Best, Alejandro, and Xander.  Then we pushed the hovercrafts for a while!  It took us a while to figure out the plug problem.  The hovercraft kept running over the plug when we were pushing it and then stopping and the kid was flung off of the hovercraft.  But we fixed it and it was fun!  Dylan had a lie detecter test that we tried out and it was funny!

Would we be able to somehow run over the plug without stopping?

How in the world do you memorize all of those hard spelling techniques?

When are we going to start Joe’s lungs?

This week I was gone on Monday and Tuesday so I luckily missed dissecting a pigs heart and lungs.  From the videos it looked really gross!  But also kind of cool.  On Wednesday we built hovercrafts!  I was partners with Joe and he had already started the planning and pretty much had it all planned out.  We had a tarp thing and we put it around a circular wooden board and taped it together with a whole lot of duct tape!  That was fun.  And then we punctured it with pencils and made a lot of holes so the air would circulate and go through and so it wouldn’t blow up.  It took two tries I think but on the third try we finished it!

And on Thursday we talked about Joe’s Heart.  Not the actual Joe but these videos that Shane started making where kids talk about Joe’s heart and his heart speaks and stuff.  Also I think they did Joe’s brain.  The videos are really funny and the video taping seems really old fashioned!  She used camera’s that you hold in one hand!  Anyways, I think we’re going to do some of those videos!  They look hilarious!  Just look up Joe’s heart on youtube and you’ll see!  Even though it was a short week for me it was fun!

When are we going to test out the hovercrafts?

How did you put the pump in the lungs to pump the lungs?

What year did you start Joe’s Heart?

This week we had a science test, studied for the science test, made cool things with an awesome 3d pen that Shane got, played the for lego explaining game, and the final people presented their senses and drugs.  We studied for the test on Monday and Tuesday and then had the test on Wednesday.  At first I was a little anxious but then when we looked over the test and Shane explained it made more sense.Shane got a 3d pen and its really cool!  Malia made a catapult that works and Stella and Ellie made a flower!  I tried to make a bracelet but it turned out horribly.  There is such a thing as a 3d chocolate pen and you can make things and then eat them!

On Monday Elliot presented his vaping slide show and it was interesting!  I think he said that there were many different flavors you can vape and all you do is pour the stuff you want to vape into this contraption and then heat it up and then you can vape it if it works properly.  Next, Joe, Elliot, and I presented our sense, neurons.  We weren’t that organized and Shane explained it afterwords really simply and it made a lot more sense!  This week was fun except for the part that I got sick at the end of it.  Glad I missed the dissection! 😉

What is the flu virus called thats so bad this year?

Is vaping addictive if you do it long enough?

What would happen if a person was launched out of a catapult?

This week we unfortunately didn’t get as many science periods as we usually do.  On Monday people presented their projects and other things.  I’m sorry but I can’t quite recall what we did.  I think the people from jump rope for heart came and spoke and explained the new program this year.  On Tuesday we had the spelling bee.  It was really fun but the first time up it was a little scary.  But it was fun and I made it on the team. 🙂  And one Wednesday a lot of people presented their slide shows and their senses.  I think we might have a science test next week and I am still confused on the senses.  Theres so many different names and explanations for each!  Moving on, on Thursday we didn’t even have have science!  We watched the play, foibles and fobbles.  (Not sure if thats how you spell it).  It was really funny!  The triplets and all the other people in the building were hilarious!  It was very well put together in my opinion!

And on Friday we don’t have science, instead we have in-depth.  The brain is really confusing.  The cerebrum and the cerebellum!  Shane said that we are going onto the endocrine system soon and it sounds confusing but also really fun.  Except for the test of course.  And we are NOT going to do the puberty skits!  Never ever ever!  It’s just disgusting and gross and just no!!!!  I’m sorry my blog was so short, but I didn’t really know what to talk about.

When does everyone dissect the pigs?

What happens to your brain if an eardrum explodes?

Why is it February already?
